About this grant
The Smart Teachers As Role Models (STAR) program, administered by the Phelps-Stokes Fund of Washington, D.C., was developed to recruit, train, certify and secure teaching positions for African-American men. The program, which began as a local initiative at Clemson University in South Carolina, seeks to build upon its experiences and develop a national network. Representatives of Mott Community College (MCC), Baker College and the University of Michigan-Flint began discussions about developing a local replication of the Smart Teachers As Role Models program in order to address the shortage of male, African-American, K-8 teachers in Genesee County. This grant will support the initial planning of a local replication of the STAR program.MCC – opened in 1923 as Flint Junior College – currently serves more than 16,000 students at its various campuses and extension centers in Genesee, Lapeer, Shiawassee and Tuscola counties. It will serve as the host agency for this initiative and provide office space, project supervision and grant development resources.
