About this grant

A decade after the end of apartheid, poverty and inequality continue to plague South Africa. The government – despite creating programs to reverse the legacies of the past – does not have the resources or capacity to solve all of the country’s developmental challenges on its own. Civil society organizations, businesses and other stakeholders need to complement governmental efforts to successfully eliminate poverty by promoting a strong culture of local philanthropy.Multiyear funding will enable GreaterGood South Africa – a Web-based, interactive portal site – to encourage a strong culture of philanthropy and giving in South Africa. The site will serve as a vehicle for businesses and individuals to connect with nonprofits and causes of their choice; enable individuals and businesses to contribute funds, resources, time or expertise to a variety of nonprofit and community-based organizations working on developmental challenges; provide up-to-date, comprehensive information on nonprofit and community-based organizations; and enable nonprofit and community-based organizations to profile themselves and make requests for resources.GreaterGood South Africa, launched in late 2004, offers an innovative and easily accessible way for the broader South African giving community to exercise their philanthropic impulses.
