About this grant

Rhodes University was founded in 1904 and is one of the oldest universities in South Africa with a reputation as a center of excellence. The Rhodes University Legal Aid Clinic: Advice Office Project activities include assisting poor people with legal advice, running human rights awareness campaigns, and supporting paralegal advice offices in the Eastern and Western Cape provinces. Past support enabled the clinic to provide training and mentoring support to advice office paralegals, provide financial support to select advice offices, and assist clients requiring legal support and representation. This grant will support the Rhodes University Legal Aid Clinic to continue to train advice office paralegals on subjects including various aspects of the law, organizational management, and fundraising. The clinic will also continue to provide backup legal services to advice offices in the Eastern and Western Cape provinces, and will make grants to at least 13 advice offices. This grant has been made possible by a partnership with Atlantic Philanthropies in support of the community advice office sector.
