About this grant

The Pacific Institute for Community Organizations (PICO) established an organizing presence in New Orleans in the mid-1980s. As a result of Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans organization, All Congregations Together (ACT), as well as the statewide organizing network, Louisiana Interfaith Together (LIFT), suffered great losses.Funding will enable PICO to rebuild the ACT and LIFT offices, including replacing lost equipment and reconstructing data and records; rebuild the ACT and LIFT organizations, including hiring five additional organizers; establish a research gathering and training system for leaders; develop a communications strategy; and support a staff presence in Washington, D.C. that will foster alliances with policy and research organizations, other networks and policymakers to more effectively translate the needs and interests of Louisiana residents into policy. Since its creation in 1972, PICO has recruited and developed more than 350 professional organizers in the U.S.
