About this grant

This general purpose renewal grant to International Rivers will support its continued efforts to protect rivers, assist communities impacted by large dam projects, and encourage the development of alternative technologies for meeting community water and energy needs. To achieve these goals, the grantee will undertake research, education, and advocacy efforts in collaboration with its global network of local communities, nongovernmental organizations, and other partners. Over the next two years, International Rivers will focus on the following three objectives: 1) improve the environmental and social policies of institutions involved in building dams, with a particular focus on emerging actors in Brazil and China, and re-emerging dam financiers such as the World Bank; 2) support a selected number of efforts to stop a few highly destructive dam projects that pose particularly grave threats to ecosystems and communities and where there is a significant opportunity to link project campaigns to policy changes; and 3) promote sustainable and economically sound energy solutions and improved river basin planning and management.
