About this grant

Since the advent of democracy in Serbia and Montenegro in October 2000, the nonprofit sector has played an important role in helping to consolidate democratic changes and facilitate public participation in decisionmaking processes at local and national levels. The nonprofit sector must continue to help create local ownership of the country’s new democracy, especially by engaging those segments of the population — such as young people and minorities — at risk of being left out of the transition process. This grant will support Civic Initiatives’ efforts to strengthen the nonprofit sector, provide civic education, improve interethnic relations, promote educational reform, and increase the capacity of young people and youth organizations in Serbia and Montenegro.Civic Initiatives, which was established in 1996, is one of the largest and most successful non-governmental organizations in the Western Balkans region.
