Interreligious Dialogue and Cooperation in Bosnia

The project goal is to promote dialogue and cooperation between Bosnia-Herzegovina’s religious communities in order to build a multiethnic, democratic society. To this end, the Interreligious Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a Bosnia-Herzegovinan, nongovernmental organization, will work with local leaders of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s four major religions and members of these religious communities to build awareness of each other’s beliefs, customs, and practices and to foster joint activities at the local level. The council will work directly with theology students, women, and young people to raise awareness and promote constructive interreligious dialogue. During the past two years, the council organized eight meetings for theological students from all faiths, brought together experts to discuss ways to promote interreligious dialogue in the country, and organized a weeklong summer camp for young people to learn about different religious customs and traditions. The council was established in 1997 through the joint commitments of the leaders of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Islamic, Orthodox, Catholic, and Jewish religious communities.
