About this grant

The program goal is to engage with active citizens and nonprofit groups to strengthen the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms in Ukraine. To this end, the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union will strengthen its network and the capacities of its more than 20 members to: 1) promote and protect human rights through a range of information and educational activities; 2) increase strategic litigation and direct representation of victims through regional legal advice centers; and 3) monitor, research, and analyze the state of human rights in Ukraine. During 2012-2014, the grantee provided human rights training and educational opportunities for lawyers and community activists throughout Ukraine and published a range of books, leaflets, and online resource materials related to international human rights law. The grantee helped establish a Human Rights House as a focal point for rights promotion. The grantee supported and strengthened a network of 13 legal advice centers that provided 9,144 consultations. During the grant period, the grantee also co-organized three annual human rights documentary film festivals, the most recent of which attracted more than 40,000 people. Established in 2004, the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union works to promote practical observance of the range of international human rights instruments to which Ukraine is a party.
