About this grant
South End in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape was a victim of apartheid’s notorious Group Areas Act, which prohibited people of color from living in areas declared white. The occupants of South End, mainly colored people of mixed descent, were forcibly removed in the 1960s and 1970s and relocated to far, outlying areas. Many of the former residents believe that the memory of what happened should be preserved for future generations and have come together to establish a museum documenting the forced removal and the impact that this had on the lives of all those who were affected. This planning grant will provide support to the South End Museum Trust to use the services of a consultant to assess its strengths and weaknesses; develop a workplan on the museum’s capacity needs; and make recommendations on how to secure its long-term sustainability.
