About this grant

The Citizen Base Initiative program aims to identify and reward innovative strategies that enhance the sustainability of civil society-based organizations in Southern Africa. Through this program, Ashoka Innovators for the Public will continue to identify and recognize civil society organizations that have been effective in building their sustainability. Learning circles and publications will be used to share information and best practices with social entrepreneurs and the sector. The organization will also continue to build and strengthen its partnerships with academic institutions to develop the skill base of individuals within social organizations and build the capacity of those organizations. To date, a total of 83 organizations and 111 individuals have participated in the learning circles and benefited from the exchanges. Ashoka was established in 1990 to promote social entrepreneurship, community development, and the sustainability of the civil society sector in South Africa and the southern Africa region.
