About this grant

This grant will enable the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars to hold a constructive policy forum of international experts on national security and civil liberties. As many countries grapple with terrorism, there is a great need to analyze the trade-off between defense of national security and protection of civil liberties and human rights. The forum will be held as one of the events of the Civil G8-2006 project, a Russian government-sanctioned initiative to facilitate discussion of issues on the Group of Eight summit agenda by non-governmental representatives from various countries. The forum will be held in Moscow two weeks prior to the Group of Eight summit meeting in Saint Petersburg. The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars is an interdisciplinary institute that provides scholarships in the humanities and social sciences and encourages dialogue between the worlds of academia and public affairs. It was established in 1968 within the Smithsonian Institution.
