About this grant

This general purposes grant to Urgewald will support its efforts to establish strong, binding environmental and social standards for international financial institutions and to garner ongoing public support for responsible and accountable financial institutions. To achieve these goals, Urgewald undertakes research, education and advocacy efforts with a global network of local communities, non-governmental organizations and other partners. The objectives for the grant period will be to provide support to non-governmental organizations from developing and transition countries where German financial institutions are involved; to work toward German policies and decisions with regard to multilateral development banks that ensure stronger environmental and social safeguards; to act as a watchdog of Germany’s export credit agency and other government financial instruments, such as financial guarantees; to further develop Urgewald’s dialogue with private banks on innovative and timely reforms intended to protect the environment and promote sustainable development; and to further educate the general public regarding the environmental impacts of German bank lending and the application of Germany’s policies in international public and private banking.
