About this grant

The Centre for Public Participation works in KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa to strengthen public participation in governance and advance the achievement of civil, political, and socioeconomic rights and poverty alleviation. The Local Government Support Programme helps to build bridges between communities and elected leaders at the local government level in order for people to realize their rights and access basic services such as water, electricity, and housing. Past support enabled the grantee to facilitate workshops and conduct training for nonprofit organizations to understand and engage with public participation policies, mechanisms, and processes. It also provided platforms for engagement between nonprofit organizations and government; trained government officials on appropriate ways to engage communities meaningfully around the development of local plans; and exposed nonprofit representatives to government budgeting processes. This grant will support the grantee to continue with these activities.
