About this grant
This grant will support the organization, Women Make Movies, to produce a documentary about education in South Africa since the democratic changes in 1994. Titled, "Life in Grade 12", the documentary chronicles the lives of four black students as they focus on getting through the final year of their formal high school education. Passing the final school examination is extremely important for black South Africans as this very often determines not only whether or not they will gain access to a university, but also what kind of employment opportunities they can aspire toward. The documentary, therefore, not only examines issues related to education, but also looks at the connections between school, community, and family, and the role that education plays in the transition from apartheid to democracy.
