About this grant

The project goal is to build support within Serbian society for constructive efforts to deal with the legacies of Serbia’s involvement in the wars of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia. With a focus on women activists and local women’s groups as catalysts of change in this process, during 2007-2009, Women in Black carried out a number of interrelated activities designed to engage women in transitional justice, including organizing visits to memorials and commemorations of war crimes and providing transitional justice training to more than 300 women in its network. In 2009-2011, the grantee will continue these activities and monitor war crimes trials and increase the use of theater, art, and film to raise public awareness of gender perspectives in transitional justice issues. Based in Belgrade, Serbia, Women in Black was established in 1991 as a network of women activists who opposed the wars in the former Yugoslavia.
