About this grant

The Regulation of Nonprofits and Philanthropy project is a continuation of the Oversight and Regulation of Charitable Organizations project which had been part of the Columbia Law School’s National State Attorneys General Program. The project provided an important educational resource for attorneys general and their staff on protecting charitable assets and ensuring their best use in the public interest and facilitated dialogue between state-level charities, regulators, and nonprofit practitioners and scholars. Over the past two years, it also did a mapping of state charities regulation enforcement resources, practices, and outcomes. The project is now transitioning to a new host, the Urban Institute’s Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy. At its new venue, the Regulation of Nonprofits and Philanthropy project will expand its mission to become a platform for the study of the entire regulatory framework of the United States’ charitable sector, both at the state and federal levels.
