About this grant
The program goal is to support a healthy policy environment for the nonprofit sector and philanthropy. The Regulation of Nonprofits and Philanthropy project provides a platform for ongoing dialogue, investigation, and interaction about the federal and state regulatory framework for the sector among state charities officials, federal regulators, researchers, and practitioners. Most recently, the project has produced a research report on state charities regulation and enforcement. Findings were presented at various relevant conferences, and a roundtable will be held in late September 2016 to identify research gaps and needs that will become a research agenda for future work. Issues to be addressed are: obtaining financial data for charities offices; federal and state oversight of nonprofit governance; and revisions to Forms 990 and 990PF. The project is implemented by the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute, a think tank that builds knowledge about the nation’s social and fiscal challenges.
