About this grant
The program goal is to support a healthy policy environment for the nonprofit sector and philanthropy. The Regulation of Nonprofits and Philanthropy project aims to document, enhance understanding, and promote dialogue related to the state and federal regulatory framework and its impact on charities, philanthropy, and the nonprofit sector. The project engages attorneys general and other state officials, federal regulators, academics, researchers, and nonprofit practitioners. In the past two years, the project has produced several research products on state and federal charities regulation and enforcement which have been presented at several relevant stakeholder gatherings and have spawned additional research and dialogue. Over the next two years, the project will continue producing further research and analysis on state and federal regulatory issues affecting the charitable sector; conduct two discussion forums; and disseminate research papers, briefs, and a compendium of papers. The project is implemented by the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute—a think tank that builds knowledge about the nation’s social and fiscal challenges.
