About this grant

This grant to Mott Community College will provide partial support for a Labor Day celebration to be held on the Flint Cultural Center campus. The United Auto Workers will host the weekend event titled, “Ordinary People Changing the World”, that will center around the unveiling of a new permanent exhibit honoring the 1936-37 Sit-down Strike in Flint, Michigan. The 44-day strike was the most significant labor event in United States history and the birth of organized labor. Sloan Museum, located on the cultural center campus, will house this exhibit that will capture the story of the 44-day labor strike. In addition to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a variety of activities are planned to attract area residents of all ages and interests, including a youth basketball tournament, classic car show, lectures, and musical concerts.
