About this grant

This grant will provide partial support for the National Commission on Adult Literacy administered by the Council for Advancement of Adult Literacy. Demographic evidence and workforce trends indicate that the adult education and literacy system needs fundamental reforming and redirection so that, on a scale unprecedented in history, adults aged 16 to 64 can obtain high quality service needed for jobs and life in 21st century America. Launched in July 2006, the commission is the most important, influential assemblage of national leaders ever to convene for an extended period of time to plan for the future of adult education and literacy in this country. The commission is expected to recommend dramatic changes in the purposes and structure of adult education and literacy as a core part of the solution to America’s highest priority problems. An extensive messaging and dissemination campaign will promote a final report to be issued in mid-2008. The Council for Advancement of Adult Literacy is an independent public charity formed in 2001 to help move the adult education and literacy system from the margins to the mainstream of American education.
