About this grant
South End Museum Trust was established to commemorate the forced removal of people of color from the South End in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape during the apartheid period. The museum not only documents this shameful episode in South Africa’s history, but also serves as a testament to the resilience and courage of the communities that were relocated to far, outlying areas while their homes, businesses, and places of worship were destroyed. The museum was started by volunteers and community members, many of them former residents with very little expertise in museums, especially museums of conscience. Mott provided a planning grant to South End Museum Trust to hire a consultant to assess its strengths and weaknesses, develop a workplan for its capacity needs, make recommendations on how to secure its long-term sustainability, and refine a vision and mission for the museum. This general purposes grant will provide support to the museum to implement the outcomes of this strategic planning process, focusing specifically on developing the museum as a community resource that can contribute to promoting healing and reconciliation not only in the Eastern Cape, but also nationally.
