About this grant

This grant to the Foundation Center provides support to publish a third edition of “America’s Nonprofit Sector: A Primer” by Dr. Lester Salamon. The book provides a concise overview of the structure and operation of the nonprofit sector in the United States presented in a straightforward and coherent fashion. Originally published in 1992 and updated in 1999, “America’s Nonprofit Sector: A Primer” is now the standard introductory text in courses on the nonprofit sector in colleges and universities around the country. Over 30 colleges and universities have adopted the book for this purpose, and many more have placed orders. Altogether, sales of the second edition have reached close to 10,000 copies; however, this edition was based on data that in many cases was current only through the mid-1990s. Many important developments have occurred over the past eight years that would be useful to capture in a revised edition.
