About this grant
In 2008, together with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Civil Society Studies, the East-West Management Institute launched a Philanthropication thru Privatization project to explore and promote capturing a portion of the proceeds of privatization sales as a means for building community-based philanthropic endowments. The Mott Foundation provided early support to the project’s case-building phase during which the project’s implementers clarified the concept, conducted research to identify 539 cases of this phenomenon around the world, and generated a detailed analysis report. The next dissemination and implementation phase will involve the development of best-practice materials and guidance manuals, dissemination of project results, and assistance for the implementation of philanthropication thru privatization processes in four to six target countries. Founded in 1988, the East-West Management Institute works to strengthen democratic societies by bringing together government, civil society, and the private sector to build accountable, capable, and transparent institutions.
