About this grant
In 2008, together with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Civil Society Studies, the East-West Management Institute launched a Philanthropication thru Privatization initiative to explore and promote capturing a portion of the proceeds of privatization sales as a means for building community-based philanthropic endowments. Crown achievements of the project thus far have been the publication of an in-depth report on the 540 instances of foundations created through such privatization transactions, a major international conference on the subject, the launch of a Web site, and the preparation of case studies and guidance materials. The next phase will involve further preparation and dissemination of best-practice materials and guidance manuals and assistance for the implementation of pilot projects in four to six target countries. Founded in 1988, the East-West Management Institute works to strengthen democratic societies by bringing together government, civil society, and the private sector to build accountable, capable, and transparent institutions.
