About this grant

The project goals are to support the development and distribution of a film about the play "Truth in Translation" and to produce an educational archive that will accompany the final version of the film. During the next 12 months, Michael Lessac, the play’s creator and a filmmaker, will work with film editors to create a feature-length film that weaves together the play’s narrative and the impact of the play on audiences and communities where it was performed. With this film, the "Truth in Translation" project will become not only a theater piece about South Africa’s struggle to come to grips with its past, but a broader narrative about similar struggles around the world in very different contexts and how people can learn from and be inspired by situations that are very different from their own. Colonnades Theatre Lab, Inc., will work with a commercial distributor to release the film. The grantee was founded by Michael Lessac in 1973 in New York City as a developmental center for theater and film.
