About this grant
The program goal is to increase public support for principles of human rights and civic activism in Russia. To this end, the Andrei Sakharov Foundation will continue efforts to create a public space for broad-based discussion and promotion of human rights and democratic thought. These will include both online and offline discussions, debates, and cultural events, with a growing focus on engaging young people on relevant issues. In 2010-2011, the grantee expanded its online presence, resulting in almost 10,000 viewers of its discussions posted online. Its campaign for a museum in Andrei Sakharov’s Moscow apartment spawned the youth Sakharov Movement which also campaigns to raise the profile of Andrei Sakharov as a uniquely Russian exponent of human rights and liberal values. Founded in 1993, the Andrei Sakharov Foundation works to promote the democratic ideals of Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov and honor victims of totalitarian oppression.
