About this grant

The Instituto Socioambiental is a Brazilian nonprofit organization focused on integrated solutions to environmental and social challenges in the Amazon region. This grant will support ongoing scientific monitoring of environmental and social impacts of energy and infrastructure investment by the Brazilian Development Bank in the Amazon rainforest, with a specific focus on compliance with social and environmental standards for the Belo Monte hydroelectric project on the Xingu River. Results of the independent monitoring will contribute to the development of a water management system to mitigate the social and environmental impacts derived from the deviation of up to 80 percent of the Xingu River flows; development of reparation plans for impacted river-dwelling communities forcibly evicted from their lands; and accounting of the social and environmental liabilities in the event of a sale of the project.
