About this grant
Promises Films was established in 1996 and produces educational media with regard to public issues, particularly in the areas of conflict, human rights, social justice, and history. "Breaking the Rules" is a 48-minute documentary film that tells the little-known story of white South Africans who joined the struggle against apartheid. It explores why white South Africans, who were otherwise living a comfortable and privileged life, risked their lives to fight for a free and just society. The story is told through the voices and memories of five individuals from diverse political and cultural backgrounds who expressed their opposition to apartheid in different ways. Through the eyes of its characters, the film also tells the contemporary story of South Africa today where fissures are emerging along racial lines. Prior funding from Mott supported the filming of some of the footage and editing for "Breaking the Rules". This grant will assist Promises Films to complete the film and will contribute to conducting final interviews, editing, and other post production activities.
