About this grant

The Old Newsboys of Flint began in 1924 as a replication of a similar program in the Detroit area. The organization receives much of its revenue from a one-day paper sale, and in 1924, that paper sale allowed it to put warm clothing and a toy under the tree for 201 children. Since then, the grantee has touched the lives of 760,000 children. Today, one of three crucial programs offered by this organization is a coat and boot program. Of the 103 elementary schools in Genesee County, 100 participate in the program by providing between 10 and 20 coat and boot referrals each. Many households are forced to choose between heat, food, and healthcare — new coats and boots may not even be considered. Funding will provide 1,333 additional coat and boot referrals to the Genesee County elementary schools in the highest need areas, particularly Flint, Beecher, and Westwood Heights.
