About this grant

Social Surveys contributes to social development and transformation through expert social research. For the past two decades, the grantee has conducted many large-scale surveys in South Africa and other African countries for an array of clients. In 2011, it initiated a research study entitled "Towards a Better Understanding of Civil Society in Africa — a Multi-country Perspective," to better understand how civil society in Africa is conceived. Mott support for the study assisted the grantee to consult experts in various sectors, gather domestic, unpublished literature to better understand how civil society is defined on the continent, and conduct community-based research to examine civil society formations more closely. This grant will support the third phase of the study, which will gather further data on the size and nature of civil society in South Africa. The research will include interviews with a representative sample of civil society organizations in South Africa.
