About this grant

Based in South Africa, Social Surveys contributes to African social transformation through conducting specialist research that improves development policies and strategies. Since its establishment in 1987, it has conducted many studies for a wide range of clients in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. This grant will support the first phase of a research study on "Towards a Better Understanding of Civil Society in Africa — a Multi-country Perspective." The major activities will include consultations with various stakeholders in South Africa, a literature review, development of an African conceptual framework for civil society in consultation with civil society institutions and other stakeholders from across the continent, and the design of the formative research to be conducted in South Africa. While this research is multicountry, the initial focus will be southern Africa, with the inception study undertaken in South Africa.
