About this grant
Emerging market countries have become a strong political block in international political and economic discussions, particularly on climate and energy policies. While the United States and Europe continue to have a strong and powerful voice within international finance institutions and the United Nations, an era has begun in which the interests of emerging market economies are clearly playing a critical role. With this changing global power dynamic, there is a need for civil society in these countries also to play a greater role in shaping international policies. This project of the South Africa Development Fund is an exploratory effort to bring together the environment and development nongovernmental organizations in emerging market countries to capitalize on their strength and diversity. This new network will address financing for renewable and low-carbon energy for the poor in developing countries, as well as undertaking related actions to address climate change. During its first year, the project will focus on establishment of the network, strategic engagement on the international financial institution’s energy strategies and lending policies, and participation in key United Nations’ meetings.
