About this grant

This grant provides operating support to the Urban Institute’s Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy. The center seeks to improve understanding of civil society and nonprofit sector performance by conducting rigorous research and analysis, developing data, and promoting dialogue on policy issues affecting nonprofits and philanthropy. Core activities of the center include: updating, expanding, and providing access to the center’s National Nonprofit Data System; supporting efforts to improve government data on nonprofits; and conducting research, convenings, and publishing to inform public policy and practice on nonprofits and philanthropy. Research areas over the past grant period included nonprofit-government contracts and grants, donor-advised funds, and nonprofit data and transparency. The Urban Institute is an independent think tank that gathers data, conducts research, evaluates programs, offers technical assistance overseas, and educates Americans on social and economic issues to foster sound public policy and effective government.
