About this grant

The project goal is to increase and enhance active civic participation in the development of local communities in Montenegro. To this end, Civic Alliance, a national-level, nonprofit based in the capital, Podgorica, will carry out research and analysis of levels and effectiveness of civic participation in Montenegro, with the goal of identifying needs and opportunities to enhance engagement. Based on this understanding, the grantee will organize training and capacity building support for local nonprofits and provide support to projects with a number of selected community-based nonprofits. The grantee will assist community-based groups and initiatives to use the media effectively, establish and run nonprofit organizations, and organize and mobilize community members around priority issues. During 2012-2014, the grantee worked intensively with seven nonprofits across Montenegro to build their capacity to work with citizen groups, engage in strategic planning, manage communications, and carry out joint initiatives. Based in Podgorica, Civic Alliance was established in 2011 by two prominent nonprofits in Montenegro in order to take advantage of programmatic synergies and to share resources.
