About this grant
Rural Legal Trust was established in 2000 to provide legal services to farmworkers, farm dwellers, and the rural poor in South Africa whose rights were being violated. It works in the Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West, and Northern Cape provinces. Past support assisted the grantee with efforts to train and mentor community-based paralegals and farmworker representatives on various aspects of the law and on topics related to the provision of basic services to poor people. The topics covered include mediation, opening files for clients, fundraising, and procedures to follow when dealing with the eviction of people from farms. The grantee also developed a case management system to be used by community advice offices to capture cases they deal with and to develop a database. This grant will continue to support the grantee to assist community advice offices and farmworker representatives in their efforts to improve the living and working conditions of people on farms.
