About this grant

This grant will support the continued development of a system to provide global data on philanthropy, civil society organizations, and volunteering. The Global Civil Society Information System will help integrate data on civil society organizations, philanthropy, and volunteerism into countries’ economic statistics; provide vastly improved access to information on civil society organizations worldwide to both donors and beneficiaries; and increase the transparency of civil society organizations. The Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies will work with the United Nations Statistics Division to improve their guidance to countries on gathering statistics about nonprofit institutions. It will also test the feasibility of a partnership with TechSoup Global in an initial set of pilot countries to secure information on individual civil society organizations for which data is being assembled as part of national economic statistics. The Center for Civil Society Studies is part of Johns Hopkins University, one of America’s premier research universities.
