About this grant
The program goal is to foster the development of a conducive environment for philanthropy across countries by providing rigorous, comparative data and by raising awareness and understanding of philanthropy, especially in developing countries. In 2016, Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy took responsibility for publishing the Index of Philanthropic Freedom, which was first published by the Hudson Institute in 2015. Extensive research and analysis across 79 countries took place in 2016 and 2017, and the index will be published in April 2018. Following the publication, which will include 79 country reports, 11 regional reports, and one global report, the grantee will create related online and printed educational materials and organize a series of events in the United States and globally to share results and generate debate. The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University was founded in 2012. Its mission is to increase the understanding of philanthropy and improve its practice worldwide through critical inquiry, interdisciplinary research, teaching, training, and civic engagement.
