About this grant

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative was formed in 2003 and today is a coalition of over 100 U.S. and Canadian mayors and municipal officials dedicated to advancing the protection and restoration of the region and its water resources. The grantee helps its members integrate environmental, economic and social priorities to protect and advance a resource that supplies 20 percent of the world’s surface freshwater and provides drinking water and the basis for a thriving economy for 40 million people. With previous Foundation support, the grantee has helped animate the voices of mayors in regional decisions, contributing to important policies to form a foundation for protecting and advancing the interests of the lakes. Renewed funding will enable the grantee to continue to connect mayors across borders and boundaries, supply municipal leaders with trusted and reliable support on a range of water issues and provide a platform for mayors to express their views in state, provincial and federal decision making forums.
