About this grant

China has emerged as an important new player in the world of development finance over the past decade. This increased overseas investment has had significant environmental, social, and market impacts. To address these impacts, it is crucial to develop not only sound environmental and social standards, but also initiatives that encourage investments to support sustainable and climate-friendly development. The Global Environmental Institute, a Chinese environmental nongovernmental organization, was established in 2004 to design and implement market-based models for solving environmental problems. It has years of experience working with Chinese development finance institutions in Southeast Asia and South Asia. This project will facilitate the improvement of environmental and social safeguards for China’s main development finance institutions and increase these institutions’ green investment portfolio through fostering small scale sustainable and climate-friendly projects in developing countries.
