About this grant

The Casual Workers Advice Office was established in 2011 to give free legal advice to workers who have been dismissed or face other labor violations by their employers in South Africa. Unfair dismissals constitute the majority of its casework. Past support assisted the Casual Workers Advice Office to: advise and support workers whose labor rights were violated; launch awareness campaigns on new labor rights and assist workers to improve their working conditions; and assist workers to establish a workers forum to discuss common problems and explore possibilities for solidarity action. The grantee also trained community-based advice offices on labor laws and supported them with difficult labor cases. Ongoing support will allow the grantee to continue to offer advice and support to workers whose rights have been violated, train and support community-based advice offices on various aspects of labor laws, and raise awareness of labor rights among precarious workers and support them in accessing these rights.
