About this grant
The global energy system is currently responsible for nearly 60 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. This system does not meet the energy needs of over one billion people around the world — 95 percent of whom live in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. To address this challenge, the International Energy Agency has called for a global energy revolution, which will require a substantial shift of investment toward renewables and energy efficiency. Through this grant, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, working with other organizations, will test and refine a community- and practitioner-led energy development model to design distributed renewable energy systems for poor rural communities. They will also work to ensure that this energy development model’s lessons impact energy policymaking as well as bilateral, multilateral, and private sector investments.
