About this grant

The project goal is to enhance the resilience and effectiveness of civil society around the world. The Center for Strategic & International Studies is building an international consortium of scholars and experts to conduct research and generate recommendations to address the issue of closing space for civil society. The consortium will examine the drivers of closing space and will identify remedies based on a combination of action-oriented research, a range of information products, and convenings. The consortium will include working groups devoted to issues such as the impact of foreign aid, increased connectivity of citizens in the digital age, levels of antiWestern sentiment, or the impact of post-9/11 security policies. Founded in 1962, the Center for Strategic & International Studies is one of the world’s preeminent international policy institutions focused on defense and security, regional stability, and transnational challenges ranging from energy and climate to global development and economic integration.
