About this grant

This grant will support the Democratic Governance and Rights Unit of the University of Cape Town to host a conference of access to justice players from at least nine African countries. The aim of the meeting is to increase awareness of the role of community-based paralegals in promoting access to justice and to explore ways of including them as recognized actors in the formal justice system. The meeting will be held in August 2017 in Kigali, Rwanda, and will include judges, officials from departments of justice, and nonprofit organizations that work within the access to justice area. The outcomes of the conference will feed into an envisaged African Centre of Excellence for Access to Justice, a project of the National Alliance for the Development of Community Advice Offices.
