About this grant

Established in 1993, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is an international alliance of more than 4,700 members in 175 countries. Its mission is to strengthen civil society and citizen participation throughout the world, especially in areas where participatory democracy and citizens’ freedom of association are challenged. Recent accomplishments include the hosting of a World Assembly and International Civil Society Week in Fiji in 2017; the release of annual State of Civil Society reports; and maintaining the CIVICUS Monitor—a research tool to share reliable, timely data and analysis on civic space. This renewal will support CIVICUS’ implementation of its 2017-2022 strategic plan, which focuses on defending civic freedoms and democratic values; strengthening the power of people to organize, mobilize, and take action; and empowering a more accountable, effective, and innovative civil society. The grantee’s main office is in Johannesburg, South Africa.
