About this grant
Created in 2008, the Latin American Network of Environmental Public Prosecutors is comprised of 300 public prosecutors from 19 Latin American countries. Public prosecutors in these countries build legal actions to strengthen compliance with environmental laws and engage in conflict resolution. International financial institutions have recently approved new social and environmental frameworks that seek to harmonize these standards with country-level environmental and social systems of law to mitigate impacts of large-scale energy and infrastructure development. However, standards in all of Latin America are generally weak, and understanding of international best practice is lacking. This grant to Uniselva Foundation will enable network public prosecutors in four Latin American countries to conduct a comparative legal analysis of international standards and country systems. They will conduct public workshops to deepen understanding of, and action to achieve, the highest environmental and social standards to mitigate environmental impacts of large infrastructure investment in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru.
