About this grant

The project goal is to deepen democratic values in Serbia and the Balkan region by strengthening the rule of law, respect for human rights, and civic participation. To this end, Women in Black will increase the active role of women in constructive efforts to deal with the legacies of the wars of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia, bolster women’s participation in social and political decision making processes, and expand women’s impact on shaping post-conflict society and civil society in Serbia and the wider region. During the prior grant period, activities included organizing visits to memorials and commemorations of war crimes sites; organizing regular educational discussion groups; supporting new community-based women’s groups; using exhibitions, street theater, and public actions to raise awareness; launching a new regional initiative to provide women a platform for publicly stating facts about the crimes committed against them and their consequences; and providing training and support to women activists across Serbia. Based in Belgrade, Serbia, Women in Black was established in 1991 as a network of women activists who opposed the wars in the former Yugoslavia.
