About this grant
China has become a major development financier over the past decade and has faced negative impacts related to some of its investments, which has led to some public opposition to further Chinese investments. Adding to these major investment flows, China launched the Belt and Road Initiative in 2013. It is an ambitious initiative to expand China’s global trade and foreign policy relations by bringing energy, transport, and communication infrastructure to link all of Asia to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Such an ambitious project is likely to have environmental and social impacts; thus the World Wildlife Fund in the U.S. and China have been working to engage with the Chinese development finance institutions and government to address these potential impacts. This grant will allow the grantee and World Wildlife Fund-China to develop a more collaborative strategy with other Chinese organizations to propose options for “greening the Belt and Road Initiative”. In addition, new communication mechanisms for monitoring and sharing information on investments for this initiative will be developed.
