About this grant

The Black Sash Trust was founded in 1955 by a group of women who were fighting for the recognition of human rights for all in South Africa. Its aim is to contribute to the creation of a society that has effective laws and comprehensive social protection for the most vulnerable. It conducts rights awareness programs for community-based organizations and poor and marginalized people. Past support assisted the grantee to successfully launch and execute initiatives based on systemic injustices faced by communities that need help from community advice offices. Initiatives included the extension of social security to children up to 18 years, equalizing the pensionable age for men and women to 60 years, and more recently, the Hands Off Our Grants initiative. Continued Mott support will assist the grantee in continuing its work with community advice offices on this initiative. The grantee will also co-create initiatives in collaboration with community advice offices on other systemic injustices faced by communities.
