About this grant

The program goal is to support a healthy policy environment for the nonprofit and philanthropy sector. The Regulation of Nonprofits and Philanthropy project aims to document, enhance understanding, and promote dialogue related to the state and federal regulatory framework and its impact on charities, philanthropy, and the nonprofit sector. The project engages attorney generals and other state officials, federal regulators, academics, researchers, and nonprofit practitioners. In the past two years, the project has produced several research studies on state and federal charity regulation and enforcement. These studies have been presented at several relevant stakeholder gatherings and have spawned additional research and dialogue. Over the next two years, the project will produce research and analysis on state and federal regulatory issues affecting the charitable sector; present at a variety of academic and nonprofit forums and conferences; host a symposium; and disseminate research papers, briefs, and publications. The project is implemented by the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute—a think tank that builds knowledge about the nation’s social and fiscal challenges.
