About this grant
International Rivers is a U.S.-based, global organization working in more than 40 developing countries in Latin America, Asia, and Africa to promote sustainable use of freshwater river systems and minimize the social and environmental impacts of large-scale hydroelectric energy development. During the past grant period, the grantee monitored hydroelectric impacts in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia and contributed to strengthening Chinese commitments to the United Nations to improve its social and environmental performance. Over the next grant period, International Rivers will work with communities affected or potentially impacted by large-scale hydroelectric finance and development in the greater Amazon rainforest to ensure social and environmental safeguards are complied with and to enhance local understanding of energy planning, licensing, and construction of hydroelectric facilities in the region.
